Newcastle City Council covers an area of 183 square kilometres and has a population of more than 145,000.
The Council area includes the suburbs of Adamstown, Adamstown Heights, Beresfield, Birmingham Gardens, Broadmeadow, Carrington, Cooks Hill, Elermore Vale, Fletcher, Georgetown, Hamilton, Hexham, Islington, Jesmond, Kotara, Lambton, Maryland, Maryville, Mayfield, Merewether, Merewether Heights, Minmi, New Lambton, New Lambton Heights, Newcastle, Rankin Park, Shortland, Stockton, Tarro, Tighes Hill, Wallsend, Waratah and Wickham.
